Ethics: historical perspectives
This 10 week course provides an introduction to ethics by examining the works of some of the greatest philosophers in the subject from the ancient Greeks to the Victorians. The philosophers to be studied are: Plato, Aristotle, Kant and John Stuart Mill. Although their writings count as 'historical', an appreciation of their arguments provides an essential background for proper understanding of contemporary work in ethics; indeed, many would claim that their work has never been bettered. All of the texts to be covered are available in the public domain and will be available through ISP Moodle, though you may wish to purchase your own books.
